What is a doula?  Why would I need one?

A birth doula is trained and experienced in childbirth and provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support only for the couple. Unlike a midwife, we do not perform clinical tasks such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams and delivery of the baby.

A postpartum doula helps mother and family adjust to the arrival of their new baby by offering education, support, and companionship during the postpartum period. A postpartum doula will help with newborn care, light house hold cleaning, meal preparation, and basic family adjustment. A postpartum doula also offers evidence-based information on newborn and infant feeding, emotional and physical care after childbirth, soothing techniques for baby, and coping skills for the new parents.

Lactation consultants are relatively new members of the healthcare field. We are professional breastfeeding specialists trained to help mothers with a variety of issues. A lactation consultant may work at a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office. She may have a private practice. Typically, she helps mothers and babies with latching difficulties, painful nursing, low milk production, or inadequate weight gain.

She's a teacher as well as a counselor and helps mothers understand the fundamentals of lactation as well as supporting their efforts to learn how to feed their babies. She may teach classes. She may help women meet their breastfeeding goals in light of special circumstances such as returning to work or school. She's familiar with breastfeeding equipment such as breast pumps and other supplies that are helpful to breastfeeding mothers and infants.

Wearing baby in a sling is likely the second most effective way of ensuring bonding and attachment.  AND, they're in style!  Excellent coincidence!  Look for one at your local thrift store.  Or, make one out of the perfect fabric for YOU.  Lots of places sell them online, too.
